Rape: Causes, Avoidance and Management

Defilement is not synonymous to rape. Defilement simply means alteration of any part of the body through feel or touch from it natural state before marriage while rape means illegal or unlawful penetration of woman through sexual intercourse. Defilement and rape is a form of defilement and its condemnable to God and Man. Sometimes people have diverse opinion on what should be acceptable definition of rape but in this context any form of forceful and self initiated sexual activities could be describe as a Rape

Who could one be a victim of Rape?

Anybody could be a victim of rape i.e abuse sexually or suffer from sexual harassment. Be male or female, boy or girl child, teenager, youth , married and even adults

How can I be raped?

Anyone who carry out sexual abuse, harassment or assaults on others is called rapists and they are the ones who abuse or assault you sexually. A rapists can be your father, mother, brother, uncle, nephew , cousin, pastor, friends (male and female inclusive), neighbor, classmate etc

Anybody could try to rape you if you create the scene through ignorance, negligence and moral decadence through attitude and behavior

Causes of Rape

I. Having/ involvement in premarital relationships (Boyfriend/Girlfriend affairs)

II. Indecent dressing

III. Clubbing

IV. Partying in unethical environment

V. Watching of reckless home video, TV programs

VI. Watching of pornography video/ pictures

VII. Indulging/ allowing feel or touch of body parts with others of the same sex or opposite sex

VIII. Involvement in kissing, caressing, pecking, hugging, romancing

IX. Walking at night / darkness

X. Visiting places where safety and security is not guarantee

XI. Exposing parts of your body for people to see E.g Breast, private parts, Laps, Bulbs

XII. Permitting others than your mummy(female) and Daddy(Male) to touch your body unnecessarily

XIII. Uncontrollably intimacy/ friendship with friends, families, relations, neighbor etc the same or opposite sex

XIV. Spending more time than necessary with persons of the same sex or opposite

XV. Accepting dating and relationship proposals while not ready for marriage

XVI. Entertaining unnecessarily calls and text messages

XVII. Headlong friendship with persons of opposite sex

XVIII. Visiting unfamiliar persons, place, journey

XIX. Taken of alcoholic drinks and drugs uncontrollably

XX. Reckless sleeplessness

XXI. Not seeking a right counsel about sex education

  

 How to avoid rape / sexual assault

In some circumstance sexual harassment is preventable if one can take note  of the following

•   Have a councilor who can broaden your knowledge on sex education
•  Cover yourself up and sleep decently both at home and public places 
• Stay away from alcohol/strong drinks that can intoxicate you at home or away from hom
•  Cancel visitation to unfamiliar friends, persons, families, places,journey

• Avoid unnecessary friendship and familiarity with persons

• Avoid unnecessary calls and text messages

• Rejects and canceled all dating and relationship proposals since you are not ready for marriage

• Avoid hanging out / around unnecessary with persons

• Avoid strong intimacy from persons

• Do not allow your body to touch or feel unnecessarily by persons except mother for a girl child and father for male

• Do not expose your body or its parts for others to see

• Do not visit or stayed in a place where your security and safety is not guarantee 

• Avoid night walking/ trip

• Avoid unnecessary kissing, hugging, pecking, caressing, romancing with persons

• Do not allow anyone to touch your body or body parts unnecessarily except your parent with a clause. As a teenager, it is wrong for a father to touch sensitive parts of a girl child such as bulbs, private parts and breast 

• Avoid pornographic videos, films and pictures

• Avoid watching reckless home video and TV program

• Avoid unhealthy partying

• Do not go for clubbing

• Stay off from indecent dressing i.e fabric that expose your sensitive body parts

• Stay off from dating and pre-marital relationship (boy and Girl friendship) since you are not ripe for marriage

Negative Impacts of Rape on victims

1.  Unwanted pregnancy

2. Contraction of disease and infections

3. Stigmatization

4. Damage to body parts/ infliction of injuries

5. Physiological and psychological trauma

6. Loss of personal dignity and respect

7. Fearful and loss of personal confidence

8. Causes mistrust and lack of confidence in others

9. Causes domestic violence

10. It can result to death

Rape is condemnable by God and Man

Rape is condemnable and it is an abomination to God the first ever report of rape in the scripture reported in Genesis 34. Dinah the daughter of Leah which she bare unto Jacob was raped by Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite Genesis 34:1-2. Because of Dinah defilement scripture gave account of what happened to Shechem, his family and entire city

“The sons of Jacob came upon the city boldly and slew all the males(Genesis 34 vs 25) “they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword(Genesis 34 vs 26)” the sons of Jacob came upon the skin and spoiled the city because they had defiled their sister” Genesis 32 vs 27 “they took their sheep, oxen, asses and that which was in the city and in the field. They also took their wealth and all their little ones, wives and all that was in the house was took captives(Genesis 34 vs 28-29). You can see the repercussion of rape capable enough of causing domestic violence or war

Rape is condemnable no wonder that in those days in Israel, it is a capital offence and the punishment is stoning (Deut 22: 23-29, John 8:5). Stoning the obligation of punishing such offenses rested upon all the people so all participated by throwing stones. Even if stoning is no longer popular as a punishment for rape. It can earn offender living in prison and detention so everybody should desist from the act

Another scriptural example of rape was given in 2 samuel 13 and 14

“And it came to pass after this that Absalom the son of David had a fair Sister whose name was Tamar and Amnon the son of David loved her”

And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her 2 Samuel 13:1-2

After Amnon cooked and thought he plotted a plan which the bible wrote as “Howbeit he would not hearken unto her (Amnon after he had persuaded her to laid with him) but being stronger than her, forced her and lay with her” 2 Samuel 13:14

What happened to Amnon?

“Now Absalom had commanded his servants saying, Mark ye now when ?Non’s heart is merry with wine and when i say unto you, smite Amnon then kill him, fear not have not I commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant

“And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as absalom had commanded” 2 Samuel 13:28-29

Therefore, from societal and scriptural view I have not seen where rape or defilement is applaud able  and commendable and treated as a capital offence with a capital punishment. It is advisable for all and sundry to desist from rape and defilement of persons especially a girl child

What to do if you are Raped

Incase you experience sexual harassment or assault , take note of the following

1. Go for medical treatment / advice accompany with periodic check up

2. Report to appropriate authority for necessary action e.g NGOs, Police, legal advisor

3. Prevent the news spread to avoid stigmatization

4. Only confidential persons and organization should be inform to avoid news spread

5. Get a good and trusted, tested chancellor for necessary guidance and counseling

6. Identify reasons why you are raped, make amend and move ahead

7. Rebuild your personal confidence and regain your self dignity

8. Know out rightly it was not your fault

9. Thin and shallow your memory the to let go the experience from your mind

10. Build your personal confidence to unseat your fear
